As stated above, Think OutWord is a peer-led training in social threefolding. Maybe that doesn't mean much to you…good! Yes! That means we're doing something new – we're not the "same old thing" – which is essential because today's problems are here today and above all else they demand new ways of thinking and working to meet them.So then - what is social threefolding? It's an approach to working within society that takes into consideration spiritual realities. If man is not just a body but also a spiritual being (which some of us actually think, though we might not admit it in polite society) then we need to factor that into our calculations when we're out there solving social problems. We're not talking fuzzy math here. It's impossible to find a solution when you're working with partial data – when you don't have the full picture.
Think OutWord is a peer-led training in social entrepreneurship for young adults that will begin in 2008 and be loosely situated in the northeastern United States. It is grounded in, though not limited to, an understanding of the threefold nature of the human being and of society, primarily as it was articulated by the early 20th century philosopher, Rudolf Steiner. Through the training, participants will gain deeper insight into contemporary social phenomena and explore different methods by which they can become increasingly engaged in socially transformative work.
Our view is that, in many respects, the social organism is sick. We feel that the overwhelming majority of political, economic and cultural leaders are entrenched in a materialistic mind set and are working with an exceedingly partial view of reality. Youth, who are instinctively idealistic and should be bringing the health-bearing impulses of the future, are having profound difficulty engaging society. There is a lack of opportunities to become involved as well as to understand the deeper causes of our social unrest. A more holistic social understanding is needed. We are hopeful that, if grounded within Anthroposophy and Steiner's social thought, we can develop such an understanding for ourselves.
The initially year-long program consists of both individual study and group work. In the individual study we will work closely with both a partner and mentor in order to develop a general understanding of the social organism and go deeper into a specific area of interest. The results of this research will be orally presented to the group as well as published online. The majority of the group work will consist of these "peer presentations"– ergo why we describe the training as "peer-led." When we gather to learn from each other we will also be meeting with instructors in order to get feedback and go further into a given topic.
The instructors will be individuals with an understanding of the "big picture" as well as an expert knowledge of the inner workings and most cutting edge practices within their given field. In the shift from individual study to group work there will also be a shift in focus from thinking to doing - from developing our mastery of ideas to meeting each other and working together on creative projects. In this way we will seek to cultivate new capacities within ourselves as well as conceive and help build the new social forms and ways of working that our time so urgently needs.
